The Wine
A decade ago, our head winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua bought Altos de la Guardia in premium Alavesa. Raised in Bordeaux, but with a Catalan mother, JMS feels as at home in Rioja as he does in France. He persuaded Hector Gomez, formerly working with Pingus, one of Spain's most illustrious estates, to join him, and since then they've been making fabulous, award winning wines. The two rebels like to challenge established traditions to produce wines with bags of fruit and gentle oak, and super fresh whites like this. The wine is a blend of Viura and Malvasia, which together create elderflower, white peach and guava characters, with just a touch of oak. A great accompaniment to spicy salt and pepper squid, paella, roast chicken or a range of tapas.
